Teaching Portfolio

My name is Glen DeGeorge and I am a graduate of Mansfield University of Pennsylvania with a Bachelor of Music Education. I am currently teaching, performing, and working in the Philadelphia area while pursuing my Masters of Music Education at The University of the Arts.
My primary instrument is trombone, and I specialize in low brass, jazz and instrumental studies. I hold a Pennsylvania Teaching Certification in Music K-12 and have also have extensive experience with orchestral instruction, general music instruction, guitar, music technology, recording arts, and theater and stage production.
I am equally comfortable with my use of technology in the classroom. While many of my experiences stem from incorporating technology in music, I also have extensive experience in web and graphic design, as well as audio and video editing and production. Technology plays an important role in my philosophy towards education, as it is crucial that students learn how to problem solve, innovate, and apply technology to their experience in an increasingly tech based society.
Teaching is an extension of who I am. I have had a wide range of students who I work with on an individual basis whose talents, learning styles, and abilities are vastly different. Learning how to best facilitate their specific needs, as learners, transcends into my approach in any classroom. It is my goal to garner a dynamic community of learners, who work toward common goals, develop a sense of aesthetic and artistry, while fostering personal independence and responsibility.
I encourage you to explore my professional portfolio. My teaching portfolio is structured using Charlotte Danielson's Framework for Teaching and is categorized by each of her four domains. I have also included sections that highlight my experience as a professional musician and work in various realms of technology.

Music Education, Distance Learning, and Virtual Teaching
As our educational landscapes continue to change, embracing virtual teaching experiences has highlighted refreshing ways to connect with students. Throughout the onset of school closures in March 2020, I developed a number of instructional videos for beginning band and orchestra students to guide them through some of the fundamental ideas we cover in our courses. My philosophy in creating materials for virtual teaching is that I want them to be entertaining, informational, and personable. Because the content creation takes hours to put together, it is also important that it is usable in a multitude of teaching models and relevant for years to come. I'm thrilled that students and teachers across the country have had a chance to utilize these videos in their own learning. Since their publication, these videos have collectively massed over 13,000 views and 600 hours of viewership.

Adapting Literature for Online Learning
One of the biggest struggles as an elementary music teacher is figuring out a way to reduce the amount of clicks needed for students to get done online assignments. We tried, unsuccessfully, to have our elementary students use certain "smart" software tools for their at home practice but it proved to be clunky and prohibitive. This year I've discovered the power of Google Slides as a "design tool" rather than a presentation tool. Drawing on my graphic design experience (pun intended), I've been able to make interactive lesson book pages and worksheets that house ALL of the necessary materials in one spot. This is an example of some exercises we use in our band classes to develop note reading skills. I added in my own backing tracks to these etudes to make them particularly entertaining for the kids to jam to.
